inspiration. The idea behind this shoot is the beautiful contrast between human intimacy and a vast, impressive landscape. The simplicity and unending nature of the desert-scape helps enhance the complexity and intensity of the romantic relationship. With the table setting, the idea was to create a burst of human warmth and connection amidst the clean, minimal background. Soft, faded colours in details such as the bouquet and table settings added dimension and warmth to the blue sky and white dunes.
highlights. Most of the team travelled up to the sand dunes in Lancelin from Perth (about 1.5 hours), departing home while it was still dark to make it in time for that beautiful soft morning light. All of us pitched in to set up the picnic table and spread, and remained in good cheer despite the early morning and the wind whipping sand onto us the whole time. It was beautiful to see how everyone gave their best for the shoot, and worked together as a team. While shooting, a pair of elderly tourists stood nearby and watched us, then started taking out their phones and photographing. We all had a good giggle at this.
challenges. The morning was much windier than we anticipated, so it was hard to keep candles upright and decor items in place. Our beautiful bride-model had a difficult time keeping her veil on. We all pitched our problem solving ideas (such as taping the candles down, anchoring serviettes with the cutlery etc) and decided not to fight with the elements, but embrace them. After all, we had chosen such a natural location… it’d be foolish to try and tame it. The veil kept flying off during the ceremony shoot, so we took it off and instead shot it later on with the models sitting down and embracing. This turned out to be very beautiful in the end - sometimes creativity springs forth from challenges!
location. The inspiration and concept for our shoot developed around our location - the Lancelin sand dunes. Here you find a vast, wide-open landscape with very minimal colours. The dunes are made of white sand, and on a sunny day, the sky is an eternal blue. We loved the contrast this seemed to bring to an intimate elopement or small wedding. As predominantly local WA vendors, we felt a special connection to this iconic place.
favourite detail. It is hard to say just one detail, as everyone made an incredible effort on the day to make everything look perfect. However, I would give special mention to the florist (
Katie Cooper Floral Design) whose dried flower bouquets were simply stunning. Paired with the linen serviettes and glass details on the tables from Boho and Prosecco, the flowers brought warmth and texture to the desert scene.
favourite moment. When we’d finally taken the last photo, we all trudged back up the dunes (getting in our morning leg workout!) and took a group shot together. Most of us had never met before, but by the end of the shoot the camaraderie was high. Making connections with others and working on a common goal is always a highlight.
