The story of Freedom Shores began when the owners fell in love with a beautiful hidden valley on the outskirts of Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays Region, Queensland. They bought the valley with the vision of sharing its unique vista with others. The nautical focus for the property now called Freedom Shores originated when the business acquired the old Shute Harbour jetty poles. The jetty was being refurbished and these poles had character and beauty worthy of being saved. The timber inspired an entire resort built around reclaimed boats to create a truly special accommodation right on the water at Woodwark. The Freedom Shores team began saving old boats destined for destruction and recommissioning them as nautical interest points throughout the grounds. Now a setting for bespoke weddings, Freedom Shores Resort opened it’s doors to the public in November 2018 and has quickly become one of the most popular venues for weddings and elopements in the Whitsundays.

Did you always know that you wanted to manage a Wedding + function venue?
I am a self-proclaimed hopeless romantic so a career in the wedding and events industry could not be more perfect. I first started in the industry working for a small wedding stylist on the Sunshine Coast, following that I worked for 10 years focussing on large scale sporting events which I absolutely loved! In 2013 I had my first baby and after my second I realised that such huge events weren’t feasible with a small family so I decided it was time to return to my roots as a wedding co-ordinator. The best thing about being based at a venue is that I get to work in a family owned and run business and reignite my love for all things weddings!

Do you have any stories that you would like to share from your experiences?
A good wedding co-ordinator never lets other people kiss then tell their story! No, but honestly, there are just way too many. The one thing that still gets me every time no matter how many weddings I have done, is that moment the groom or bride at the alter turns around and see’s their partner for the first time walking towards them. As hard as I try to hold it together, I always shed a happy tear.

What advice would you offer to Nearly Weds who are just starting out on their search for the perfect venue?
My advice is always do a site inspection, a venue can look amazing on paper but when you get there you can find that actually it’s not quite right, or the other way around it can look ordinary in photos but when you get there it could blow you away! And as soon as you decide it’s the right venue for you book it! It only takes the next phone call and you can lose your date so sign the paperwork and pay any deposits to avoid disappointment.

Tell us about the best part about what you do:
Easily the best part about what I do is meeting all my amazing clients, hearing their stories and their dreams for the future. I love playing a small part in their life journey and sharing their most special day with them it truly is an honour.
