The initial vision for this shoot was to seamlessly blend the two opposing styles of boho & glam. "To start, we took inspiration from the season. Our colour palette of ruby, gold & coffee was inspired by Autumn; teeming with red wine trees, golden leaves & comforting mugs of coffee." Sandie tells.
The elements of boho ranged from wild florals & Persian rugs, to multi-textured tableware & an unstructured two-piece gown, while weaving elements of richness throughout. You can see the bold strokes of glam in the groom’s velvet dinner jacket, the chaise lounge, the bespoke jewelled heel accessories & the gold cathedral-inspired ceremony backdrop. It even had matching gold pieces, which were hung from the ceiling to mimic chandeliers!
In summary, this shoot really epitomises Bohemian Glam! It combines the fun & free nature of boho weddings with luxuriously glam styling elements...
What are some of the highlights you had during the shoot process:
One of the most exciting parts for our dream team was planning out each of the elements, & watching how it all fell into place, one part at a time. We were still totally overwhelmed at the end result on the day when the florals, outfits & styling pieces were all brought together. It was even better than we’d envisioned!
During the shoot itself, I can honestly say there wasn’t a moment without laughter! Giving the bride & groom cues such as “pull a silly face at each other” & “get cuddly” & even just “do something crazy!” created this gorgeous interaction, which translates in the photographs. Personally, when the laughter is genuine in images, it gives me the warm fuzzies, because then you know it’s real.
It also helps when the coordinator has to run through a flock of birds in the background (flapping her arms & squawking) just to get ‘The Shot’.
Did you face any challenges on the day? If so, how did you overcome them?
Surprisingly, there weren’t many challenges on the shoot day itself. We’d put enough thought & planning into the preparation that left very little room for error. Saying that, we did give the contributing vendors a flexible brief, so they had the opportunity to bring their own slice of Creative Genius to the shoot. It all came together beautifully & the day was huccup-free!
What led you to decide on this venue/shoot location?
The venue had just recently launched their newest Reception room, so that was the initial spark of inspiration for the shoot. Since Sandalford Estate is a winery, almost all images of their weddings are characterised by rustic wine barrels & rows of vineyards, so we decided to highlight the non-winery aspects of the location. We utilised the new function room (for both Ceremony & Reception), the open grassed field & the lake at sunset. Not a wine barrel in sight!
What was your favourite detail about the shoot day?
The little unexpected details are always my favourites! A few particular memories stand out:
The bride’s plum jacket was especially fun; it gave a glamorous, quirky & functional facet to the overall bridal style. In the Reception styling, we wrapped the table-top in a plum tablecloth & then topped it with a clear acrylic sheet. It was very contemporary & gave the vibe of a custom-made table!
We had the idea of creating a Reception Suit for the groom! Since so many brides are having an outfit change during the day, we thought we could help make the groom feel equally as special!
A bit about the outfits:
For the bride
The raw silk two-piece gown had a very organic feel, with an open back, & a thigh-high split in the skirt. We wanted to showcase a celebration of this cozy season, so we added a jacket for the Reception. See, brides can still be trendy in the colder months! Two statement crowns were also custom-made, using ruby crystals & gold leather (which matched her shoe jewellery!)
For the groom
Flipping the newest trend of a reception dress for the bride, we introduced a Reception Suit for the groom! He started out with a tan & coffee Day Suit, white shirt, and a casually elegant open collar, before changing into a burgundy & black Dinner Suit for the evening, with matching bow tie.
